Overdue Update

So it's been a long time since I've updated this blog. I've done an okay job updating Ravelry with my knitting projects but it's been too long since I've update the rest of my life.

Let's see since August of last year - wow, we're almost done with another school year. Evan is in 4th grade, Cece is in 2nd, and Will is in 1st grade. The kids are doing well. Everyone played basketball over the winter. It was Cece's and Will's first basketball teams. It was fun to watch and they got better with each game. Evan played for St. James's 4th grade team. His coach was great. They learned a lot and won most of their games.

Evan has continued to play soccer. He practiced all winter at the Omaha Football Club's indoor facility. He's next goal is to make the under 11 premier team. He's always got a soccer ball at his feet.

Cece is going to make her first communion this April. We're going to have a get together afterwards, with an Edible Arrangement (fruit), a cake from Dairy Queen, and some California rolls. Sounds like a nice combination.

Cece decided not to play softball this year but may try it next year.

Will will be playing baseball soon and is excited to be on a team with the St. James gang. He is also playing soccer this year for OFC, Academy. This means a lot more practices! Thankfully, Dave takes care of most of the sports details.

Sarah is now engaged and planning a wedding for July 2, 2010. Cece and I went to MPLS for her first wedding shower. It was fun and nice to hang out with both her and Roger.

A few other bits and pieces. Dave bought me a Cannon Rebel, D40?, for Christmas. I'm still getting used to it.

I'm going to make serious effort to update this blog more often . . .

AUGUST BIRTHDAYS

Summer birthdays - Evan is now 10, and Cece is 8. We had our usual birthday party - opened presents in the morning with Dave and had the Howards over for cupcakes in the evening.

Cece has since cut her hair - 10 inches! Her ponytail is still on the kitchen table waiting to be mailed off to Locks of Love.

Evan, as you can see, hasn't had a hair cut in quite some time. I love his hair - it's wild, frizzy and the perfect hair for an up and coming soccer star.

Sorry this post is all janky - photos everywhere all haphazardly placed. But hey, I'm just trying to post more often.

Knitting Continues

This cute little hat is from a Ravelry pattern called Toasty Topper. I made if from orange and navy wool from the yarn closet. It's made according to the pattern with only a few modifications - if you look at the comments listed for the pattern you'll see that the short rows should/can be done in the reverse order, 21, 14 and 7. It was a quick knit and turned out cute. I hope the parents of the little Chicago Bears fan like it.

I also made this cute little hat, again from a pattern called Cozy on Ravelry. I made it with 3 colors of Cotton Ease and lined it with white fleece for softness and warmth.

I made the Women's Day Sweater from 1968? A pattern that a fellow Raveler so kindly lent me. It's made from Cotton Ease. I enjoyed knitting it but I'm unhappy (as always) with the button band. The cute buttons either help by drawing attention to them or hinder by drawing attention to the button band itself, I couldn't decide so I left all of it alone. I packaged it up and sent it on its merry way.

I was however, pleased with the decreases on the back and how nicely they matched.

Challenger Soccer Camp

This summer Evan and Will (and the Howards too!) attended the Challenger Soccer Camp - sometimes called British Soccer Camp. We had the pleasure of hosting one of the coaches Michael Howes (I hope I'm spelling that right), anyway, it was so much fun. The week of soccer camp was HOT - the hottest week of the summer so far. Everyone made it though, even Michael on his torn ACL.

Chevron Love Mittens

I was so excited when I saw that there was going to be a kit for these mittens. I broken my Lent vow to give up buying yarn for 40 days and purchsed the kit the very day it became available. Here's the problem. I don't like the way they're knitting up - so many color changes! The advice given on Ravelry was to carry all the colors up the side of the mitten (sort of twisting them as you go). Like most good advice, I didn't take it and began on my own version of carrying the yarn. I hate the way the inside of the mitten looks. My delimma is to frog or carry on - I think I can start over without frogging and then only frog if needed. Thank goodness there's no snow in the forecast.

Summer of '09 Begins

It's been a long time since I posted anything on this blogsite. March? Really, Amy let's put some effort into it. Okay, so here's what we've been up to. Soccer and baseball. These past couple of months have been hectic, we had 4 soccer teams and 1 baseball team to follow. We're now down to 2 baseball teams - summer brings a less-hectic schedule. And yes, I know I do it to myself by signing them up. Kids need sports - activities, something they can feel good about. I'm now stepping down from my soapbox.

Let's talk knitting - that's a lot more fun. Okay, I've been knitting a lot since March. I made another hat or two and then switched to knitting for babies. Anyone who follows this blog (and I laugh at typing 'follows this blog') knows that I'm constantly making ISU sweaters - in the past few months I've made 28 plus 7 more that are yet to be 'monogrammed'.

Here's the photos, take a look then I'll discuss -
This is a pocket hat I made in Creighton colors - Evan wanted something that would hold his little IPOD shuffle. Cute hat - bad embroidered "C". Next time. . .

Now for some non-hat projects, a sweater and matching Ribbons Hat from Susan B. Anderson. I gifted this set to Jenny Howard so that she could give it to a friend with a new baby girl. Made from Cotton Ease from the yarn closet.

Next up a baby bunting, again gifted to Jenny Howard for a baby gift. Pink and white cotton ease from the closet.

I had A LOT of trouble making the button holes match up to the buttons while also making the stripes come together correctly. It was made from my favorite Cotton Ease (you'll see a theme here).

I made a little raglan sweater from yarn that I'd purchased in NYC a long time ago. I gave this little set to Sarah for Roger's first nephew. Yes, Sarah and Roger are still going together and soon . . . who knows.

I also made these cute little booties - what a set.

I also made this little sweater because my Dad asked me to make something for someone he works with who just had a baby boy - and it's Cotton Ease too!

Last but not least the second Clara dress. This time Berroco Comfort cotton/acrylic mix? I've had this yarn since September - and I remember that because Biddy bought it for me, thanks Bid. Lot's of photos.

More Knitting

I had to stay home for three days this week. Cece was sick and stayed home for 4 days - Dave stayed with her for one day so that I could show my face at work for at least 2 days this week. She's finally better - strep was the culprit. It was a wicked one. I've done a lot of knitting so let's get to those project photos. This weeks theme was hats, Nebraska, Creighton, St. Pius/St. Leo, Pi x 2, the second Game Day Hat (Detroit Red Wings), and a Vikings hat for Luke. Sorry, no photo yet of the Creighton hat.

Gotta cut this short - feel the need to have a cold one with the neighbors.

Post Christmas - Way Post

I've been knitting a lot lately. I got Mom's sweater done before Christmas even though I had to order more yarn from California (Johanna, from the store we rode our bikes to - and it was CLOSED). I got the exact yarn, right down to the dye lot! Impossible to repeat - the Christmas angels were on my side. Mom seemed to like the sweater. I'm sorry to say I forgot to take a picture of it. I even made the buttons, well, Cece and I did. It was a fun project all the way around.

I've made lots of hats, 2 Hanna (name of pattern from Ravelry), a couple Calorimetries (sp?), winter witch mittens (for me), a Starwars hat for Will which was horrible and has since been frogged, and my best, current project, a Detroit Red Wings hat for 'Uncle Dickie'. I'm going to mail it tomorrow, so if you read this post, please don't spoil the surprise.

I also made the cutest little raglan sleeve sweater - from yarn that I bought in NYC about 2 years ago. I made a ribbed head band and a soccer ball too. I made a scarf for 'Big Dog' aka Uncle Phil, and a neck warmer for one of the nurses at work. I'll upload some photos soon.

It's February and I've already fallen off the yarn wagon, I've bought a few skeins here and there . . . you don't need the details.

Sorry for the jumbled post, I'll do a better job next time. Photos to come.

Pre-Christmas Warm Up

Short little blog to let everyone know that the knitting continues. My new favorite pattern, the Better, Better Bucket Hat, made and packaged up to mail to Erin Carmody. I hope she likes it. Check the button out, PERFECT match. On to the next one for Sarah.

I've got 8 sweaters ready to send to Kristin/ISU. And I've got a pretty good start on *)*'s @#$%&%$. You'll have to wait until after Christmas for those photos. Pray to all the Christmas angels in heaven that I don't run out of yarn. . . I'm off to knit.

I Don't Want Yarn for My Birthday

First, I've completed all of the teacher gifts for Christmas, the BYOB (check ravelry or knitty), and 2 hats from the Shall I Knit You a Hat book. All turned out great - even though my first plan was to make three BYOBs. WAY too much seed stitch. The hat/book idea came from my knitting mentor, Susan B. Anderson. I made them complete with fleece for a nice, warm hat (even though they probably won't be worn outside). The yarn that I chose was even like the color of the hat in the book. Lucky me, well stocked yarn closet comes in handy again. The photos - aren't Cece and Will cute? I practically had to beat Will to get a decent picture, he's constantly goofing around. Come on, knitting photos are serious business.

Remember the Better Bucket Hat from the last post? We'll this weekend, it was completely frogged and re-knit into the Better,Better Bucket Hat and I LOVE it. I seriously ranks up there with one of the best FOs. The match of yarn to pattern was perfect, again that yummy Malabrigo. It's like knitting with butter. I went with the Better, Better Bucket because the brim needed to be wider and the pattern was perfect. The button that I got from the Dollar Tree was, yes, only $1, and again it's perfect. Mom said that she liked my hat after seeing my post - wait until she sees the BB and feels that yarn. The hat is hers - for her 65th birthday. I can't wait to give it to her.

One more photo for a little mood lighting - I could have used some cropping/editing of the photo - see the flowered chair in the background, oops.

I've got an 'order' for 55 ISU sweaters - holy knitting Batman that's a lot of sweaters. I've got 3 more dish clothes to make for a total of 15. I've got 2 sweaters on my mind (yarn secured), and the Plum Blossom mittens.
Here's some great news, I'm teaching Trisha at work to knit. I hope she enjoys it even 10% as much as I do - we'll never be at a loss for things to talk about. Go Trisha - knit that dish cloth, learn that knit stitch!
Last but not least it was Will's 6th birthday last week. Here's a true story. He woke up from a nightmare crying and came into my room on the night before his birthday. When I asked him what was wrong he said, "I don't want yarn for my birthday". No kidding, a yarn nightmare. I assured him that I wouldn't give him yarn for his birthday and he fell back to sleep. Me? I cracked up, couldn't wait to share the story with my sister Biddy, and fellow knitters. Here's Will and our signature sign (a tradition from Jane).

Other, Small FOs

Here's a few pics of the projects that I finished over the weekend - a lot of soccer equals a lot of knitting.
A Better Bucket hat, not quite finished, still needs a button, or a band, or something.
These are ISU Christmas ornaments/gift tags - whatever - I'm going to 'pitch' them to Kristin and try to sell them to ISU. I'll make them with engineering monograms like the little sweaters.

I've started a BYOB (check Ravelry) for Evan's teacher. My mission is to make 3 to that I can use them for Christmas presents for all the teachers. That's my plan. I'm using up some Cotton Ease, 10 skeins to be exact, all in St. James' colors.

Clara Dress

Here's the story behind the Clara Dress. I saw this little dress (in the Soak ad) as I was leafing through a knitting magazine at work. That is to say my old job - - certainly not this new gig. ANYWAY, one of the nurses saw it and asked who I was going to make it for, my reply was that I didn't really have anyone in mind (as is true for a lot of the baby knitting that I do) she said she'd buy the pattern/yarn and I could make it for her new granddaughter. So I was suitably hooked up. She ordered it, delivered it to me and presto. The Clara Dress was born. It was challenging, required much frogging, and much concentration, it wasn't TV knitting. It turned out great, those of you who knit, may notice a few small boo-boos near the bottom center. I'm considering making it again in a baby yellow with cotton yarn so that it looks more like the Soak ad itself. Enough. Photos.
And a close up - check out that gift tag/washing instructions, cute huh? I snagged it from a fellow raveler. This photo shows the true color, a nice celery?
AND I've completed all the ISU sweaters. AND I'm working on dishclothes and the "Better Bucket Hat" with my new-favorite yarn, Malabrigo. YUM.

The End of Summer

The end of summer is near. Things are about to change in the Lounsberry house. I've taken a full time position at the hospital. Meet your new surgery scheduler. I'll be working 10am-6:30pm M-F. Everyone will be in school all day and then go to the after-school care until Dave picks them up at 5pm. I'm excited to do something new and to have evenings and weekends off.

Soccer is going full steam ahead. Evan is playing on 2 teams. Cece and Will each play and Dave is the coach of Cece's team. We're going to be busy and I'm going to knit a lot. The knitting keeps me from being a complete freak during the soccer games - screaming and yelling needs to be kept to a minimum and knitting helps.

Okay, here's what I've completed since the last post. A February Baby Sweater by Elizabeth Zimmerman. You might remember my previous post about how much trouble I was having. Well, it's done and damn cute too! I made a pair of Saartje's Booties to match. They're cute too. Hopefully, the sweater will fit a baby (yes, again, I knit with not recipient in mind) at the same time the booties will. Judging only with my mother experience, the sweater seems small and the booties big. Here comes my mantra. . . "Oh, Well."

I also finished Cece's room. It was the one thing, other than knitting, that I wanted to accomplish before school started again in the fall. Check these photos out. The handles on the dresser have since been repainted a chocolate brown - it's all complete now. The circles are so cool - they're static decals from Lowe's, 5 for $10. Quite the eye catching detail.

The ISU sweater count is a a mere 2 1/2. I've got to get going on those. That's what I'm going to concentrate on. Never mind all the other things I want to make...

This blog had to be interrupted as Will just got stung by a bee TWICE! . . .

I've just come off of working 10 days in a row - 24hrs this past weekend alone. It may not seem like much for those of you that work 5 days/week, but for this part-timer it's a lot. Just prior to this stretch I was lucky enough to squeeze two vacations in. The first to California (thank you Jane & Pat), and then a family trip to the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore.

I've managed to get a little knitting done and a lot of yarn buying in. I've won a contest or two, purchased a few books, and signed up for a knitting class at the LYS. I've completed a few projects and started a few too. I've also got a project in the 'basket' that needs to be started and I haven't touched it! Yes, that would be the ISU sweaters (24?). Anyway, you get the picture.

Here's some more exciting news to those of you that knit. My brother made me a pair of sock blockers. He's amazing, he made them the very day that he got the pattern, AND he made 2 pair. Well, you know that gets a girl's mind spinnin', we've got to sell'em I told him, as I dropped an overstuffed envelope full of patterns in the mailbox. Can't wait to see what he comes up with. He's every bit as talented with a saw as I am with a pair of DPNs. In return I've got a pair of socks in mind for him.

So on with the photos...

This is a captain's hat made with Kool Wool from the stash. It was easy and turned out cute - it's also up for grabs, not spoken for yet.

These socks were part of the car knitting on the way to the Black Hills. They were made with a generic pattern and a 3x1 ribbing. They're heading to Grimes, after they get photogaphed in those new blockers that is.

This was made for my mom. A July 4th gift? Fashioned from self-striping kitchen cotton.

This is the before photo of the Christmas stockings that I made for Claire and Joe. And then the after . . .

This was the Snow Boarder hat for Sarah's birthday - it was a little big and this picture makes it look a little like Pippi Longstocking's hair. The photo doesn't do it justice. At least it will be warm. It's made from Kool Wool (again), and also from the stash closet (which is becoming seriously over-stuffed).

Some of you may recognize this - as the February Sweater from Elizabeth Zimmerman. I'm back at it. AGAIN. It's been only slightly less of a pain in the butt. I started it while working overnight. I had to do plenty of frogging. I can't for the life of me figure out why this pattern pushes my knitting abilities so. I think it's in the way the pattern, 'pithy' as it my seem, is written. I'm going to finish this little one and show the end product soon. It seems to be quite small - all this trouble for a tiny baby sweater with no recipient in mind. Oh, for the love of the craft.

Here's a quickie - a bunch of photos of finished objects.
This is Daisy, a cotton ease sweater - I love it. It was fast and turned out very cute. I made it for a nurse at work to give to her new granddaughter.

These are ballband dishcloths - made for another co-worker. Her kitchen is red, white and blue. They constitute mindless knitting and they turned out nicely.

Here's Cece's new anklets - they were made during the first 3 days of swimming lessons. They're cute but they don't stretch much.

Next up - a book that I won on a fellow knitters blog. I won by guessing the amount of change in a dish - I guessed $54.20. I'm reading it now. Sorry, too lazy to go back and rotate the photo - I'm sure you get the picture. I think Biddy and I met this author in MPLS at the Knit-Out.

I've been on quite a yarn buying spree lately - I can't even begin to count how much cotton ease I've bought. (Something like 42 skeins - wow - when you put a number to it . . .) ANYWAY, I bought some and it arrived vacuum sealed. Here it is without air.

This is the beginning of a Christmas stocking. It's only one of four skeins to knit to complete it. I'm done with it now and have yet to felt it. I've started on the other one, I'm about 1/2 way done with it. I'll felt them at the same time and show photos on the next blog.

I'm ending with my favorite photo (supplied by another baseball parent) of Evan. His Farm 8 team, the Black Sox are headed into the tournament as the number one seed - for the second year in a row I might add. He's quite the utility player, even got to pitch to 3 batters, struck 2 out and threw a home run ball. Not bad. Notice that crazy hair - it's since been cut (thank you Pauly).

Here it is, Will's Spiderman blanket. It was a challenging knit and I'm glad that I stuck it out (numerous emails to the designer, corrections to the pattern, ordering more yarn, using multiple circulars) and completed it. It's a nice blanket, even if it is all bunched up under Will's bed.

The photo is on our mauve carpet so the colors are off just a bit. It was made from cotton ease and the black is something else from my stash (purchased in NYC=Gotham City). I really thought that this project would help deplete the stash - nope I have more now than ever with 21 new skeins of CE on the way! God help me.

Okay, I finished the dishcloths too! Here's a photo - bad one. Cece helped in the picture taking. They turned out nicely too. I just got some self-stripping cotton for a few more.

There are 27 of those babies - each one different (for the most part - I got kind of lazy at the end).

I've completed the little Daisy sweater - working on the buttons now. It's soooo cute! I've also completed 4 of the 25 ISU sweaters and I've picked Kristin's pumpkin sweater back up and I'm hoping to have it done so that I can give it to her this Friday. We're making a trip to Adel, IA for some sort of fiber fest. Spinners, dyers, and SELLERS of indie yarn. Lord help Biddy.
I almost forgot to post a photo of Erin's Math Hat. If you can't tell it has the Pi symbol and it's never repeating 3.141517 (or something like that). It's red with pink numbers but the pink is very light and looks like white. Again, I give it the knitter's "Oh well". Hope she likes it anyway. I actually made it twice. I finished the entire hat, then took off the ribbing, redid it, took off the top and redid it. I like it much better on the second go-round. I'm going to mail it tomorrow.

Evan is the model. He was thrilled.

A Bitter Pill

These photos are of my most recent project. It's (or was going to be) Elizabeth Zimmerman's February Sweater. I'm making it for Ann Spellman's new baby. I've already frogged it twice - just the yoke. NOW, I've really jacked it up. I had to call Biddy to have her regurgitate some of the same advice I constantly spew about how you MUST rip out and redo so that when you're done you're not focused on the mistakes that are left, but on the finished project at hand. Okay, it was a bitter pill to take, but swallowing hard, I took it out. It will be worth it. It will be worth it - my new mantra.

At Biddy's suggestion, I'm going to concentrate on something else - at least in a physical sense - and work on the never ending spiderman blanket or some newly requested ISU sweaters. Either one will be worked on with the EZFS on my mind.

As far as FOs go, here's my mint-chip Jaywalker socks. I love them.

p.s. the spiderman blanket is huge - it takes 20 minutes to do one round. Should have those last 15 rounds done sometime in 2010.

I Must Digress

I just finished RUNNING for 31 min. on the treadmill. I had some random thoughts while running today, which, by the way is only the second time I've ever ran that long. I'm used to walking for up to an hour but running is somehow mentally different. Okay, so my thoughts . . .
running for runners (which i will probably never categorize myself as) is like knitting to knitters. it's mentally and physically taxing. while I was running i thought how exciting it is to finish at a particular time or distance. It's fun to talk about it to other people who run. I wanted to get off that treadmill and call someone. I want to do the same thing when I acquire new yarn/patterns/technique. my sisters (each for different reasons are the ones i want to call). this lead my to another random thought, cece has no sisters - who will she call?
i'm going to keep running on that treadmill thanks to the howards and i'm going to keep having random thoughts. i actually thought about running outside and it makes me a little nervous. that's my next hurdle, like cables, intarsia, or 2-handed knitting, you must learn something with every project.
since January? but surely since February i've learned that i can move more and eat less, i can find the time to both walk/run and knit. sarah and johanna thanks for the encouragement, biddy thanks for being able to share knitting (my FAVORITE OBSESSION) with me. i'm rambling and tearing up, maybe that's what those endorphins do to ya'.
but i digress...

March Madness

All I have to say about the NCAA tournament is GO DRAKE! My dad used to follow Drake back in the day, and who doesn't remember Dolph Polliam from 1-2-3! ... that's how elementary it's 'gonna be...
I've finished a few things lately. The weather is getting better and this might be my last push before the knitting mojo is gone.

These are a nice cotton-y socks for Kristin - I hope they fit. They seem a little small,as I suppose they should be, for my size 10ish foot. They're super soft and made from Comfort - a yarn I now love. They're a basic, top down, 3x1 ribbed sock with nothing fancy. That toe up sock was too much for me. I did use a size 3, 11" circular needle - it was fantastic.
Okay, project number 2 is a baby Giacomo hat for Sarah's friend's brother's baby boy (poor grammar, I'm sure). It was knit up in one night using some left over Falk yarn and a few odd skeins from KnitPicks, Wool of the Andes. It's cute and was simple. I may try a larger version and some baby, thumb-less mittens to match.

Next up a photo of the Inga hat that I finished. I love the colors the pattern and the process (which I'm much better at now having watched a tut on knitting with 2 hands).

Anyway, the only thing I don't like is the fact that the hat is too long, too tall. Next time I'm going to take a few rounds off the bottom for a shorter, better fitting hat. I loved the braid and used it on the very next hat, the Center Square hat from Knitty Winter 2006.

It was a joy, made with double strands of a worsted weight yarn, nothing note worthy. I made it while the rest of the family watched an incredibly long, Pirates of the Caribbean. It's for Cece but unfortunately, it too is a little small. Next time I must remember to add some extra room for that ponytail! Here it is, I incorporated the braid from the Inga hat. It was even shorter before I picked up the cast on stitches and made a short ribbing. I think it needs a pom-pom/pon? but Cece says no.
Next up? More ISU sweaters, but with a different top-down pattern that must be perfected. After that, (in no particular order) Kristin's Pumpkin Sweater,White Witch Mittens, felted clogs/slippers,more hats, those unpaired socks x 2, Christmas stockings x 2, and the Must Have Cardigan. Wow that seems like a tall order - good thing I love to knit.

Knit-Out 2008

I started out on Friday afternoon at Knitted Together in Des Moines, and found a few skeins. Then off to pick up Kristin and my sister Biddy a newer knitter and a great spender! We headed north on Saturday morning in great weather and got to the MALL at about 11:15. We got rock star parking and headed in. We ran into Jenifer and found Susan B. Anderson of Itty Bitty Hat fame all within about 2 minutes. We by-passed the huge lines of people waiting for free fun fur and other wonderful swag. I was more than impressed with how nice, not to mention humble, Susan B. Anderson was. She was just so darn cute. She signed my book, took a photo with me and allowed us to walk with her to another one of the Knit-Out venues. I felt like I was stalking her, I watched for her everywhere that day. She gets my, 'you made my day award'. (once again, a BAD photo of me - next time I'll dress as if I might get the chance to take my picture with Susan (?) SBA (?)) To my defence, I was sort of shaking on the inside, but I could have at least smiled.
Okay, now that I've come down from cloud nine, I'll give my humble review of the Knit-Out. Let's just say it doesn't get the 'you made my day award'. People stood in line for hours to get free, well, with no better word to describe it, CRAP. Save the authors and designers it was not a great gig. It was not what we were looking forward to, we were looking for the hand dyed, hand spun yarn. All we wanted was a chance to spend some money on yarn. We did eventually find that opportunity to spend at a few of the LYSs in MPLS. Our motto was leave your money in the Cities, and we did.
The weather took a turn for the worse and we had to make an over-night stop in Mason City due to the ice and blowing snow. It gave us time to knit and to have a few adult cocktails.
Here's what I purchased over the weekend and what was waiting for me when I got home.I got this sock started during the 25 mph drive home. I love the yarn and I love my new 11" Balene Needles even more. Socks will be for Kristin. A great travel pal - no complaining or foot tapping while we shopped endlessly for more yarn we didn't need.

I got this Pumpkin color for a sweater for Kristin - those who travel with the knitters will get something knitted for them.

These skeins are for the White Witch Mitts, a free mitten pattern on Knittingdaily from Interweave Press.

I got these two skeins in Des Moines. Both are sort of Neopolitan - browns,pinks,tans. I can't wait to make some socks from these. They're Opal and Sockina Cotton.

This is what was waiting for me when I got home. Three skeins of LionBrand Cotton Ease in pineapple for more ISU sweaters. I bought it on Ravelry (my newest obsession).

This is the longest blog ever - so thanks for hanging in there. By the way, don't the photos look better? Amazing what a piece of white poster board will do for the photos.
One of the best things about the Knit-Out was the opportunity to meet people who just plain love to knit. We met Anna and Lou from California and they were great. I hope they read this blog and we become long-distance knitter-friends.

Oh yea, and I forgot to add...I finished the Noro striped scarf. My photos don't do it justice, nothing like Jared from brooklyntweed. I think I really liked the photos of his scarf more than the scarf itself. Oh well, live and learn. The process of hunting down those four skeins of yarn was fun, it was a quest. I only used 2 skeins, so I think I'll make some fake fair isle hats with the left overs.

And since I'm confessing, I also broke down and bought 8 more skeins of Noro to make and felt some Christmas stockings for Joe and Claire as a wedding gift.

So my 'no yarn purchases until Feb' has been busted. But it was on sale, 20% off, couldn't pass it up.

Friday Update

Since I've last updated the blogsite, I've completed another pair of leg warmers. I made them for Sarah's very tall friend, Fran. Hope she like's them. They look just like Sarah's only 'a few rounds' longer.

I also made these

Cece got a new coat, in MY current, favorite, mint-chip colors. I made them with my two-color knitting in mind. It's pretty simple 2 color knitting, but 2 color non the less. I even made a cute little picot edge around the wrist. I watched Susan B. Anderson's tut and it was super easy.

Next on the needles? MY mint-chip socks and some felted slippers for some of the girls at work.

Hello all. I've had a few 'good' knitting days lately. A few projects actually started and completed. I had three days off from work and Dave was home so that meant that I could spend some quality time with the ol'knitting needles. I made a hat, 2 bibs, and one sock. Here's the photos.

GO HAWKS!

YEA! I've finished the Hawkeye socks. Let's reveal the recipient - Paul Graves. Paul is my sister-in-law's father who's been battling skin cancer. Although I don't know him very well, he seems to be a tough ol'bird with never ending strength. Here's to you Paul, a pair of socks. It's not much but I thought it might brighten his day and warm his feet. Thankfully, I'm sure Paul has never held a pair of knitting needles so maybe he won't notice that the socks, although close in color do not actually match. One is WAY more orange than gold. ANYWAY, I'm happy to have those babies off the needles and on to something else. (Jen, I'll give them to Johanna to bring with her on Sat.)
I happen to have one more skein of the Hawkeye sock yarn. Anyone interested in a pair of socks - they'd have to be either small or very short, maybe anklets? Any takers?

Here's my other Christmas projects, some finished in July, some just a few days ago. The small blanket and 'yoga' leg warmers. In the middle of my knitting the leg warmers Sarah told me that she'd just gone to her last class. Sarah, you'd better have signed up for another class! Notice the barely noticeable stripes in those leg warmers. I was pleased with how they turned out, they're soft, warm, and ready for the downward dog.

What's next? The Noro scarf. Can't wait to see that baby start to stripe...again, not sure of where it will make its home upon completion.
That's all, gotta knit. Oh yea, and early, New Year's Resolutions? 2008 is the year of color, 2 color knitting for me and better knitting photos - I'm going to work on the lighting issue. The new 'green' light bulbs suck, they're just not bright enough.

Hey bloggers (that's how Rosie opens her talkie blogs, Susan B. Anderson opens with 'hey knitters'). Thanks for sharin'.

ANYWAY, I have new knitting news. I've finished 4 of the 6 Cy Sweaters - yea! I've also completed a hat and matching mittens. They're made, loosely, from the same pattern as the ISU mittens. They're for my neighbor Jenny - hope she's not reading this blog so that I can surprise her. Here's a photo.The mittens have the same cable as the hat - you just can't see it very well in the picture.
I'm now going to finish the green cardigan and then I'll be working on some leg warmers - yes leg warmers. It's funny but, they were the first thing I made, when I re-took-up knitting. I was a freshman in high school and although I knew how to knit, I'd never used DPNs and Jane helped me. She was very patient whilst in the midst of getting her MBA and raising 3 kids. ANYWAY, they were navy blue, acrylic and I wish I still had them.
The new leg warmers, or leggins, as I've seen them called on blogsites, will be made from a soft black, self striping yarn. I have to frog a hat that was too big and get going. The best part is, I don't have to buy any yarn. I'm having new project jitters - can't wait to start.
Hey to the 'knights'. Hope that cabled mitten is going well. I'm expecting a photo. Kudos to you for giving it the ol'college try.

Dotting the I(s) and Crossing the T(s)

Today is Will's birthday so we had a little party this morning (and a trip to CoCo Key this past weekend). He's 5 and quite the little guitar player. Here's my first try at a movie from my camera. Click on it to start it and don't wait for the audio, as there is none. Not quite sure if my camera is capable of it - I'll check that out. The movie really needs sound - so I've checked the camera. Sound not available. Sorry.

I'm trying to close up a few projects before the holidays, and before the holiday knitting sets in.

Here's what I've been up to. I've finished blocking and seaming the black boxers for Sarah, they seem a little large so I'm waiting on for her to try them on before I decide what to do, buttons? waistband? frog?

Now what I have the critical information that I need to complete the sleeves of the green cardigan, I'm back on it. It won't take long - might even be done before Christmas.

I've been asked by a certain someone to knit 6 more 'Cy Sweaters'. Now that's a doable number, no waking up first thing with a fear of not getting a sweater done in the next 24hrs.

I've also come to own a few skeins of Lorna's Laces sock yarn in BEE. I'd rather it be called Hawkeye, but BEE is okay. Can't wait to get those babies casted on. I'm not sure who the recipient will be - that will come to me as I knit them.

Oh yea, and I finished one sock on size 2 DPNs. I love them, but they may be a tad too small. Oh well.

October 07 Knitting

Hello all, or hello few I should say. I mostly update this blog for myself. I love the combination of knitting, writing, and photos. Recently, I've been in a knitting groove lately. I've made 2 children's sweaters, a matching hat, 2 navy blue shrugs (one short sleeved/one long - no photo YET), a hat with ear flaps, and a pair of mittens. WOW. All this AND from yarn I had in the yarn closet.

I bought a new book, 2 Socks on 2 Circulars. It teaches you how to do just that. Knit 2 socks at the same time on 2 circular needles. No more SSS (second sock syndrome). I say BS, AND WTF. This 'method' is a pain in the butt. I could have made a whole drawer full of socks by now. I was constantly fighting the needles - PITA. I've since moved those socks, yea the dull, boring gray ones to DPNs, the cute little 5 inchers that I bought not too long ago.

The sweaters were for a my friend's niece. I made the first one - oops - too big, and made the next one the next day. The pattern was free off the Internet and easy as pie, and fast. I gave the other to another special one year old on her bday. So they fit a 6-9mo old and a 1 yr old. The hat was from Itty Bitty Hats, basic rolled edge hat with a 'Marly' topper. Super easy.

I made the navy shrugs for Cece and her best friend from school. Cece's was short sleeved and Emma wanted long sleeves. I made them based on the pink/orange sweater construction but made them without a pattern. They're done in LionBrand Thick and Quick - again easy and fast.

Evans hat with ear flaps is made from the same yarn. The pattern for it was from DIY Network.com. From Knitty Gritty - a fun show to watch while napping!

The mittens are for Biddy's knitting pal. She sent the yarn and "never wanted to see it again". It was in a bit of a...tangle. The pattern that I used was from an old holiday knitting magazine I dug up. They look good from far away. I found some mistakes, but they'll still be warm. They cemented my hatred for 'fu-fu' yarn.

Since I'm rather wordy today, I'll just close by telling what's up next on the needles. I'm going to go into a finishing stage. Finish the gray socks, finish the black underwear? boxers? And then push into the Christmas season, oh the variegated greens and reds...barf.

Maybe a little more sock knitting to come. I figure it's about time I knit up something in the ol' alma mater's colors.

It's almost Halloween so I've also included a few photos of the youngins. Cute huh?

Sarah E (ala Rosie fame) sent me the PEACE t-shirt. I normally would not post a photo of myself, but I'm throwing caution to the wind, and here it is. Sarah H got her's from Sarah E too and we're sending the photo for a chance to have it posted on Rosie's blog. Here it is. No comment other than that.Except notice the Hawkeye colors! Thank you ALL for remembering this old gal, Dave, Mom/Dad, Biddy, Johanna, Sarah, Kristin, Jane, Sam/Sarah E. I had a great b-day and treated myself to an IPod Touch and some yarn (not a lot). I also had a few celebratory cocktails. Again, thank you.

I have finally finished all of the Cy sweaters. It's been a long time coming and feels great to be done, and to be sending good'ol ISU the bill.

Here's a photo of less than 1/3 of the finished product. Thank you G-Juli for sewing the monograms. Unfortunately, the sewing machine broke and is in need of a repair, sorry.

On to a little knitting . . . I had the pleasure of attending Biddys Knitting Knight. She holds class at her kitchen table (handmade by Rich). Her students have 3-ring binders, come with their homework done, and are an enthusiastic bunch of knitters. Hi Susie. Hi Sherry. You're all on your way to being great knitters! Keep up the good work.
I'm going to make a baby sweater and matching hat, then 2 matching shrugs for Cece and her friend Emma. I'm off now to fold clothes and find the perfect pattern for that perfect yarn.

Back Into the Swing of Things

Catholic school, uniforms, first day of school photos taken outside when everyone is squinting. Priceless.

We're getting back to the 'back to school' routine - sort of. Evan is playing soccer and Cece and Will play micro soccer. We're busy and enjoying it.

The Lowe's visited during the Labor Day weekend. We had a good time. Biddy and I did a little yarn shopping and came upon many a good deal. At least that's what we told Tom and Dave. What they don't know . . .

I've been trying, without much satisfaction, to rearrange my 'yarn closet'. I think I need professional help. Bottom line, I have too much yarn and too little space to store it in. Maybe when Evan moves to college I'll take over his room, that may be enough space. Maybe.

I'll post a few photos - various ones, not much on the knitting needles except those ISU sweaters. They're coming along.

Cece's sixth celebration (say that 5 times fast). Her birthday was great. Thank you all for the gifts - until you're more formally thanked by Cece herself.

Summer 2007

So we're finally back to school, at least Evan is. I'm hoping to start updating the blog site more often now that I'll have a little more time to myself.

So here it is in a nut shell. We've had a great summer, tons of swimming (thank you Muzzy), a couple of short, weekend trips and a last minute hurrah at the Iowa State Fair. It should not be missed, never, go every year. The corndogs and the knitting exhibit are worth the price of admission.

Knitting? Well, I haven't been very productive with all the going's on this summer. I finished the shrug/bolero for Kristin. It turned out good except a little on the short side. I also finished 6 of the 35 Cy sweaters. Lord, I really need to get on those babies. Oh yea, and I've been working on a little som'in som'in for Sarah for Christmas. I cannot reveal just yet.

I haven't bought much (insert yarn here) lately. Trying to hold out. I did get a new book, Knitting from the Heart. I love everything in it. All easy and colorful. Can't wait to get going on some of those projects.

Next on the needles? Finish up that gift for Sarah, Cy sweaters (forever), maybe some felting. I'm thinking slippers galore (oh yea, I bought some wool roving to needle felt with). Hey, it was on sale.

Now what you've all been waiting for. Photos.

And a few stitch markers. They were so easy, Cece and I made them one afternoon. I was obsessed at the craft store finding just the right beads etc. I can see how beading can become an obsession. Look for the little yarn/needle charm. Perfect.

Here's the finished shrug/bolero. Again, a bad photo. I MUST work on the photography. Really. I 'wrapped' it on a Vera Bradly, padded hanger, black with maroon print. It looked nice on the hanger. Missed the photo op.

Just a note to tell of a few projects that I can cross of my list. I've finished frogging the RL sweater from the Goodwill. WOW what a project. I would not recommend it for anyone unless it's the last cotton yarn on the planet. WTF was I thinking?

I've almost finished the shrug. I only have to block it and sew the side seams. It turned out okay, but I'll never use Debbie Bliss Cathay again. Twisted sister. I finally solved the problem, while finishing the ribbing, by placing two rubber bands around the skein so that I could drop it to untwist it every few yards - or every yard.

New projects on the horizon - more ISU sweaters, and after that I'm undecided. I'm still working on more dishclothes.

More Cotton/Fiery Bolero

Here's more dish cloths - for a woman that I work with. Well, her mother actually. They're from the Mason Dixon book, easy and fun to make.

Here's the first skein (of 5) on the Fiery Bolero. It's going well, the pattern in pretty easy but the yarn twists on itself and it's kind of a pain the @#$. It looks good to the non-knitter. It's a gift for Kristin.

Here's a sweater that I bought at Goodwill for $3.50. I'm frogging it, now that's a lot of cotton (Ralph Lauren) for just over 3 bucks. AND a lot of work. The sleeves were easy, but the front and back were made as one piece and it's a little more challenging. More photos to follow.

A little non-knitter's note - Evan went to soccer camp at Creighton this past week. He loved it (and it gave me LOTS of knitting time). Cece and Will had to amuse themselves and they played on the Bluejay and rode bikes in their new 'sneaks'. Couldn't resist a cute photo.

Sorry, messed up the last blog - it ended too soon. Here's the picture of the shrug and also a photo of a baby kimono from MDK so cute. I made it for a girl at work, she loved it. It was knit with Sugar 'N Cream, super easy,and embellished with ribbon and some velcro to hold the inside closed. Off to knit a hat with a cute wreath of flowers around the brim.

We're back from our Easter visit. Thank you to all of you who put us up over the weekend, Sarah, Dick & Jen, Jim & Julie, and Biddy & Tom. The house is somewhat back in order and the laundry is done so it's time to blog.
First let me show a picture of Sarah's Easter eggs. She was inspired by Martha. The process was fun and they turned out great. Everyone keep your eyes open for silk ties for next year.

Here's Sarah's bath mat - it became a bit of a bath carpet. The border really seemed to make it so much bigger. Optical illusion? Maybe. Anyway it was fun to knit and may serve a true purpose IF it fits in her bathroom.What's next, you may be asking yourself, or you may NOT be asking yourself. I think it's going to be the baby kimono from MDK, again with cotton, Sugar 'n Cream. It's raining here so what else could I do to fill my time.

St. Patrick's Day - Paddy O'Knitty

Just got back from the LYS (that's local yarn store - for you non-knitters out there). Picked up some yummy cotton in ecru and white (not the Lion Brand organic that I've been after) for Sara's bathmat. Can't wait to start.

Erin's sweater is coming along nicely, striping is working out great. I'll have a photo to share soon.

Projects on the horizon? Baby hats for the gift shop at work, maybe even a money-making (not profit making) venture for me. We'll see.

This seems appropriate to start my new blog with Herky. I'm an Iowa grad from what now seems like the dark ages, 1989. No internet, no home computers (too expensive), no blogging. I'm thankful as I never would have graduated - spending all my time on the internet.

Okay enough - now to the important things in life, my family, my kids and my knitting.

I'm addicted already. I've figured out that I can blog during Rosie, perfect.

If you're still having trouble getting photos uploaded, I solved that by using Foxfire as the browser. I still have some kinks to work out - like picture placement.
Believe me, todays blogging has just begun.
